The Power of Fate

Again, I would like to question the power of fate in Oedipus Rex. I think fate plays a major role in the plot of the drama. What does Sophocles try to convey to the readers? People should not fight against fate? Iocaste is an ignorant and tragic character. She does not even know the person who sleeps beside her is her son as well as the murderer of her husband. Undoubtedly, this is the power of fate. Human can never know the whole truth before he or she is destined to know. Sophocles has come out with the helplessness of human, or even their foolishness of trying to handle the things beyond their ability. For example, Oedipus who tries to know the truth despite the disagreement of Teiresias and Creon has finally defeated by his own ignorance. Maybe, human should be moderate in everything they do; Maybe, human should not try too hard to know everything in this universe. Maybe, curiosity does not only kills cats, it kills human as well.

Yes, I agree with you-curiosity can kill. But, somehow, we need that curiosity to go on with our living. Oedipus's curiosity is good, but unfortunately it brings about his deadly fate. Fate is so powerful that we could never run away from it-which is terrifying! Realizing that such unfortunate character like Oedipus exist, makes me realize how thankful I am for not having such fatal fate! Huh...

Well well well...at last i found someone who agrees with me. Actually i questioned myself too, what actually Sophocles tries to convey here. Besides, i do not really like this play. it is a very sad and tragic story of an innocent man who is being chased by the so call FATE. i do not like the story because i think it is human right to feel curious especially about OUR OWN PARENTS. Maybe it is true he let his anger control himself and killed his own father (which he himself does not know). Oedipus is innocent and I do like him. Maybe Sophocles just wants to show us that human are incapable of running from fate created by God. However, i would like to think that no matter what we do, we still have control of our own destiny.
